for a commute in los angeles this was a whopper. it took the shuttle more than 60 hours to complete the 12 mile route from lax to the museum. on friday it snuck a late night look at a doughnut shop and turned the 405 freeway into a shuttle crossing. >> such an amazing bit of technology, history, adventure. >> reporter: when "endeavour" arrived it was an hour ahead of schedule but then everything seemed to slow the shuttle's roll. >> thought i missed it this morning. when i turned on the news, great i'll see it. >> reporter: the crowds suffering dehydration in the sun got in the way. the wing span almost clipped buildings and trees. moving at just 1 mile-per-hour, it wasn't even giving molasses a run for its money. the city had already cut down 400 trees and raised 100 power lines to give the five story shuttle enough room yet dodging space junk is apparently easier than ducking power poles. high wires had to be lifted and more trees were trimmed. the shuttle lost more time when a scheduled maintenance stop stretch from two hours to five. then came the final stretch. the shuttle shuffled down ma

. this is a live look from los angeles as the shuttle makes its way to its new home at the california science center. and look at all the people out tonight in l.a. watching that. it's taken two days for the shuttle to make the 12-mile trip. crews had to maneuver it through the streets of los angeles as you saw there. nbc's stephanie stanton talked to excited fans who lined up to get a glimpse of the shuttle. >> reporter: thousands of excited fans lined the streets for day two of the shuttle's slow crawl through the streets of l.a. >> this is history. >> reporter: at top speeds of just 2 miles an hour, officials navigated the 170,000-pound shuttle through the city, carefully avoiding trees, street lights, and even coming within inches of some buildings. why'd you want to come see it? >> because it looks really big. and cool. >> oh my god. huge. really huge. it's amazing to see that this was in space and now it's here in our city. >> reporter: last night engineers were faced with one of their most difficult maneuvers yet, getting "endeavour" across the 405 freeway. this morning, the shuttle ma

this stretch of the route from los angeles international airport to the california science center. now, what we can show you is, okay, we have the wing that's really close to that tree. if we look over on the other side of the street, you can now see the platform starting to move. but you can see it's almost out of room on the other side of the street. so it's a very, very delicate maneuver. this platform that it's on, each of the wheels can move individually. it can go side to side and backwards and forwards so they're trying to reposition it right now to get around that tree and try to save it. we have asked a couple of the workers here who are managing this whole process whether they're going to cut the tree down or not. they say they don't know. they have tried throughout the process to save as many trees as possible. 400 have been cut down along the route. they'll be replaced 2 for 1, but some of the residents of the communities have been upset because they don't want to lose any trees. we're still watching the process and we're going to see whether it gets by the tree. you can watch as th

's start right there in los angeles with the shuttle endeavor. it has been on the move for most of the morning, but it still has a long way to go. a long way if you happen to be trying to move an 85-on the space shuttle. john zarrella is live with us watching it all go by. john, good morning. tell us just how slow is this thing actually going? >> reporter: well, i think it's funny because in orbit, it goes 17,500 miles an hour, and on the streets of los angeles, its top speed has been about 2 miles an hour. so this is certainly the slowest the shuttle has probably ever gone and it's one of shortest trips it's ever made, a total of 12 miles from l.a.x. where it left yesterday to the california science center, which will be its new and final home. they are about halfway home now. we can see from some of the live pictures we have out there now. they're about four blocks from where we are just off of manchester, and this is one of the areas where they expect that about 5,000 people will be gathering here as the shuttle goes by. this is the old forum arena here where the los angeles

're still raising money. tonight in los angeles mr. obama will be joined by bill clinton at a fund-raiser, and the president continues to shatter records. he's nearly doubled the number of fund-raisers george bush held and has dwarfed his other predecessors. it's paid off. last month a new fund-raising record, $181 million in just 30 days. a total of 835 million breaking his own record of four years ago. mitt romney has raised at least $548 million, and here's what's remarkable, if both men had stayed in what's known as the public financing system in which they can't take huge donations but then get matching federal funds, they could have only each spent $135 million. that means the president has really raised six times what he would have been allowed if he had stayed in the public financing system. now, mitt romney is going to continue today to try and flip florida into his column. he has another appearance in port st. lucie a little bit later today. >> astonishing numbers, david, thank you. >>> we'll turn to the political showdown, not between presidential candidates, but rather
